PA-MC-T3 Multi-Channel T3 Synchronous Serial Port Adapter Enhancement

This feature module describes the PA-MC-T3 Multi-Channel T3 port adapter (PA-MC-T3 [=]), which can now be configured as either customer equipment or network equipment.

This document includes the following sections:

Feature Overview

The addition of the equipment {customer | network} loopback command enables you to configure the PA-T3-MC as network equipment or customer equipment so it can operate based on the ANSI T1.403 standard. When a PA-MC-T3 is configured as customer equipment, all loopback requests are honored. When configured as network equipment, the PA-MC-T3 ignores the following DS-3 and DS-1 loopback requests:

Far-end alarm control (FEAC) code requests for the DS-3 line

1-28 DS-1 line loop-up or loop-down

Payload loop-up or loop-down

Line loopback full-rate patterns of 0001 and 001 loop-up or loop-down

Extended Superframe data link (ESF-DL) line loop-up or loop-down

ESF-DL payload loop-up or loop-down

ESF-DL SX.25 payload loop-up or loop-down

When configured as network equipment, the PA-MC-T3 recognizes router network loop commands as line loopback commands.

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) requests for loopbacks are always honored, whether the PA-MC-T3 is configured as customer equipment or network equipment.

Benefits

The PA-MC-T3 port adapter now provides the following key benefits. With the addition of the ability to configure the PA-MC-T3 as network equipment or customer equipment, the PA-MC-T3 no longer responds to in-band control-line loopback codes when configured as customer equipment. The PA-MC-T3 can now disable network (line and payload) loopbacks on both the T3 and T1 connections. This prevents customers from setting loopbacks at the network end. This feature is useful for all router equipment deployed as network equipment that interfaces with customer equipment.

Configuration Tasks

See the following sections for configuration tasks for the PA-MC-T3 equipment loopback command. Each task in the list indicates if the task is optional or required.

Configuring the T3 Controller (Required)

Configuring the T1 Lines (Required)

Verifying the Configuration (Optional)

Configuring the T3 Controller

A T3 Controller must be selected before other configuration commands can be enabled.

Command
Purpose
Router(config)# controller t3 slot/port-adapter/port

Selects a T3 controller.

Configuring the T1 Lines

Perform the following steps to configure each logical channel group:

Step
Commands
Purpose

Step 1

Router(config)# controller t3 slot/port-adapter-port

Selects a T3 controller.

Step 2

Router(config-controller)# t1 line channel-group
number timeslots range

Configures the T1 line with a value of 1 to 3 in a logical channel group (values are 0 to 23) and specifies the timeslots (values are 1 to 24).

Verifying the Configuration

To verify the interface, T1 line and T3 controller configurations, perform the following steps:

Step 1 Enter the show interfaces serial command in privileged EXEC mode to display information about the newly configured interfaces.

show interfaces serial [slot/port-adapter/port/t1-line] [:channel-group] (for Cisco 7500 series routers)

show interfaces serial [slot/port/t1-line] [:channel-group] (for Cisco 7200 series routers)

Step 2 Enter the show controllers t3 command in privileged EXEC mode to display information for all 28 T1 lines within each T3 port adapter in the router.

Command Reference

This section documents the new command that configures the equipment feature. All other commands used with PA-MC-T3 are documented in the Cisco IOS Release 12.0 command reference publications.

In Cisco IOS Release 12.0(1)T or later, you can search and filter the output for show and more commands. This functionality is useful when you need to sort through large amounts of output, or if you want to exclude output that you do not need to see.

To use this functionality, enter a show or more command followed by the "pipe" character (|), one of the keywords begin, include, or exclude, and an expression that you want to search or filter on:

command | {begin | include | exclude} regular-expression

Following is an example of the show atm vc command in which you want the command output to begin with the first line where the expression "PeakRate" appears:

show atm vc | begin PeakRate

For more information on the search and filter functionality, refer to the Cisco IOS Release 12.0(1)T feature module titled CLI String Search.

Usage Guidelines

Use this command to configure the PA-MC-T3 as network equipment or customer equipment so it operates according to the T1.403 ANSI standard, allowing equipment configured as network equipment to disregard network loopback commands.

Examples

The following example configures the PA-MC-T3 as network equipment:

equipment network loopback
