Cisco IOS XR Network Examples

The examples in this document illustrate configurations for a local-to-remote network that are running Cisco IOS XR software on the Carrier Routing System (CRS-1) routing systems and Cisco IOS software on the Cisco 12000 series routers. The document contains the following sections:

Troubleshooting Information

The assortment of examples consist of the output of the show running configuration command for the following combination technologies:

internal Border Gateway Protocol (iBGP) and Open Shortest Path First (OSPF)

BGP

BGP and Intermediate System-to-Intermediate System (IS-IS)

BGP and OSPF

Topology Diagram

All examples reflect the network topology in Figure 1. The network contains two CRS-1 routing systems, labeled SYD_CRS-1 and SJ_CRS-1, and three Cisco 12000 series Internet routers, labeled 12406_r4, 12404_r4, and 12406_r3.

Figure 1 Network Topology

show running-config Command Output for Each Node in the Topology

This section contains the configuration output from the Cisco IOS XR software and the Cisco IOS software for each node in the topology.

12404_r4

This section shows the configuration running on the Cisco 12000 series router labeled 12404_r4.

Verification Commands

You can use the commands in Table 1 to verify the BGP configuration:

Table 1 BGP Commands

Command
Description

show bgp neighbors

Displays information about BGP connections to neighbors, use the command.

show bgp

Displays entries in the BGP routing table, use the command.

show bgp neighbor-group

Displays information about the BGP configuration for neighbor groups.

show bgp process

Displays BGP process information.

show bgp route-policy

Displays BGP information about networks that match an outbound route policy.

show bgp session-group

Displays information about the BGP configuration for session groups.

show bgp update-group

Displays BGP information for update groups.

show bgp af-group

Displays information about BGP configuration for address family groups.

You can use the commands in Table 2 to verify the IS-IS configuration:

Table 2 IS-IS Commands

Command
Description

show isis neighbors

Displays information about IS-IS neighbors.

show isis route

Displays IP reachability information.

show isis topology

Displays a list of connected routers in all areas.

show isis interface

show isis mpls traffic-eng tunnel

Displays Multiprotocol Label Switching traffic engineering (MPLS TE) tunnel information.

show isis protocol

Displays summary information about the IS-IS instance.

show isis checkpoint adjacency

Displays the IS-IS checkpoint adjacency database.

You can use the commands in Table 3 to verify the OSPF configuration:

Table 3 OSPF Commands

Command
Description

show ospf

Displays general information about OSPF routing processes.

show ospf border-routers

Displays the internal OSPF routing table entries to an Area Border Router (ABR) and Autonomous System Boundary Router (ASBR).

show ospf neighbor

Displays OSPF neighbor information on a per-interface basis.

show ospf route

Displays the OSPF topology table.

show ospf virtual-links

Displays parameters and the current state of OSPF virtual links.

You can use the commands in Table 4 to verify the OSPFv3 configuration:

Table 4 OSPFv3 Commands

Command
Description

show ospfv3

Displays general information about OSPFv3 routing processes.

show ospfv3 border-routers

Displays the internal OSPFv3 routing table entries to an ABR and ASBR.

show ospfv3 database

Displays lists of information related to the OSPFv3 database for a specific router.

show ospfv3 neighbor

Displays OSPFv3 neighbor information on a per-interface basis.

show ospfv3 route

Displays the OSPFv3 route table.

Troubleshooting Information

The procedures for troubleshooting an IOS XR software configured network are similar to those for troubleshooting Cisco IOS software-configured network. Generally, your troubleshooting efforts should proceed as follows:

1. Isolate and reproduce the failing scenario.

2. Collect relevant information from show and debug commands, configuration files, and protocol analyzers.

3. Identify the first indication of failure in protocol traces or internal debug output.

4. Look for the cause in configuration files.

If the via-zone is suspected as the source of a call failure, isolate the problem to a gateway or gatekeeper by identifying the affected subfunction and focus on show and debug commands related to that subfunction.

Troubleshooting Commands

Table 5 provides commands you can use to locate problems in your network configuration:

Table 5 Troubleshooting Commands

Protocol
Command
Description

BGP

show bgp truncated-communities

Displays routes in the BGP routing table where inbound policy or aggregation has exceeded the maximum number of communities that may be stored with a route.

show bgp convergence

Displays whether a specific address family has reached convergence.

show bgp paths

Displays all the BGP paths in the database.

IS-IS

show isis mpls traffic-eng advertisements

Displays the latest flooded record from MPLS TE.

show isis mpls traffic-eng adjacency-log

Displays a log of MPLS TE adjacency changes for IS-IS.
