The Incremental Device Update (IDU) for Resource Manager Essentials (Essentials) 3.4 is a collection of updated files necessary for Essentials 3.4 to support new Cisco devices. In addition to the devices supported, this package also contains fixes to known problems, as well as additional newly discovered problems.

If you are a registered user, you can download IDU 2.0 for Essentials 3.4 from:

http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/cw2000-rme

Cautions

Before using Resource Manager Essentials, ensure that:

All applications are stopped before you upgrade Essentials. The upgrade process depends on having reasonable interaction times with the database. If this is not possible, the upgrade fails.

If the Y2K Compliance Assessment Tool is installed on your machine, you must uninstall it before installing this version. Otherwise the installation fails.

You do not have CWSI Campus 2.x and Essentials 3.4 on the same machine.

You cannot use Proxy Management, if you have not installed the CiscoWorks2000 VPN/Security Management Solution 2.1 bundle. The Auto Update Server, which is used for proxy management, requires the VMS bundle to function normally.

Support Information

Resource Manager Essentials supports only US-English and Japanese versions of Windows 2000. Set the default locale to US-English for US-English version and Japanese for Japanese version.

CSCdt22462

Strange 6 minute delay while downloading console on Windows 2000.

On some Windows 2000 machines, the initial download of large Java applets, or their subsequent downloads (if not cached locally), may take longer than expected. This may take up to 6 minutes in some cases. After the applets are loaded and cached locally, downloads are quicker.

The delay is caused by client side filtering mechanisms such as virus scanning. Some virus scanners are configured to automatically scan content that is downloaded by browsers. This consumes a lot of memory and results in disk paging on most machines. Downloading is therefore slower than expected. The effect is reduced on machines with large RAM and virtual memory.

Workaround:

Disable your machine's virus scanner. This will improve Java applet download times, considerably.

Or

Disable automatic scanning of all downloaded files, and instead, enable scanning of just program files (specified by extension). Instructions will vary depending on the specific virus scanner you use.

CSCdt22462 (contd.)

If McAfee VirusScan is installed on your machine:

Launch VirusScan console. Click Configure.

Click Download Scan.

With Detection tab active:

Make sure Enable Internet Download Scanning is not selected.

Select Program Files Only.

Click Apply, then OK.

Before performing the above steps, close and exit any programs that are actively downloading.

CSCdr72310

InstallShield unable to trap dbupdate failure during Essentials install.

Resource Manager Essentials installation requires a standard Windows NT dll file (CTL3D32.dll).

Workaround:

If CTl3D32.dll is not on the system, copy the file from a standard Windows NT system into the winnt\system32\ directory before installing.

CSCdt82319

System View not present after restoring database from rme.dborig.

Applicable system view for Media Convergence Server and VPN Devices is missing when runtime rme.db is replaced with pre-packaged rme.dborig.

Media Convergence Server that is under Resource Manager Essentials > Syslog Analysis > WorkFlow Report.

VPN Devices that is under the following:

VPN Management Solutions > Reports > Configuration Management > VPN Configuration Reports

VPN Management Solutions > Reports > SyslogAnalysis > Advanced

Workaround:

After replacing rme.db with rme.dborig, do the following:

1. Stop daemon manager.

2. Change directory to:

install-dir\conf\bg2rigel\rme

3. Execute the command:

install-dir\bin\perl
install-dir\dbupdate\dbupdate.pl
r06000vpn.txt

4. Restart daemon manager.

This will re-insert the missing Applicable System View to Essentials database.

CSCdr72068

Command syntax is not clear for restore backup.

Restore backup fails with fresh Essentials installation, for the command:

restorebackup.pl -d database-backup-directory

The output message does not clearly explain the command syntax to be followed for restoring database backup on fresh Essentials installation.

Workaround:

Execute the command:

install-dir\bin\perl
install-dir\bin\restorebackup.pl -force
-d backup-directory

to restore the backup database after installing Essentials 3.4.

Administrator Known Problems

Table 3 Administrator Known Problems

Bug ID
Summary
Explanation

None

Error message during restore:

tar: Could not change access
and modification time
of....:Permission denied.

The problem is an error from .tar file in restore log. You can ignore this message only if the error is reported for subdirectories that .tar file creates during restore. The error is valid if .tar file reports an error for files it is restoring.

The working directory should be the root directory on the drive where CiscoWorks2000 is installed, not CiscoWorks2000 directory itself. The default CiscoWorks2000 directory is:

C:\Program Files\CSCOpx

Workaround:

Enter this command at the DOS prompt:

perl c:\Program Files\CSCOpx\bin\
restorebackup. pl -d
c:\backup

Device/Agent Known Problems Impacting ANI Server and Essentials Functionality

If you want to run Resource Manager Essentials on a multi-homed machine, set the variable MULTI_HOME=true in the install-dir\objects\cmf\data\Transport.ini file and restart Change Audit process.

None

TACACS with SecureID.

Essentials configuration archive does not support TACACS with SecureID. It supports static passwords that are defined when you add or import devices into Essentials inventory.

None

Standard device prompts required for Configuration Archive Telnet mechanism.

Telnet transport mechanism cannot retrieve or update device configurations if any remote devices have nonstandard device prompts.

Accepted and standard device prompts on Cisco IOS devices have strings ending with greater than symbol (>) or the pound symbol (#) at Telnet login and enable mode. Accepted standard device prompts on Catalyst devices end with keyword enable at Telnet enable mode.

It is recommended that all managed devices should have passwords.

None

Banner commands on devices.

Banner values are contained between quotation marks (") in Config Archive and between Ctrl-C (^C) characters in a device.

When using NetConfig or Config Editor and cwConfig, or Telneting to a device, do not add quotation marks or Ctrl-C characters to banner commands on devices. Banner commands containing these characters cause configuration applications to function incorrectly.

Do not use Banner commands that contain multiple line banners.

None

Configuration Import message.

Cwconfig cannot validate syntactic correctness of configuration files uploaded to device via import command. As a result, import is reported successful even if configuration file is invalid. Configuration update does not succeed, but Cwconfig cannot detect failure.

None

Devices with multiple IP addresses.

TFTP transport mechanism might not work for devices with multiple IP addresses when device is managed by using hostname in the inventory database. SNMP library used by TFTP, queries for only one IP address for a given hostname while resolving the hostname with the corresponding domain name server.

For a device with more than one IP address, the hostname resolution might not return the IP address of the interface running the SNMP agent. In such cases, TFTP fails and displays SNMP Time Out Error.

Workaround:

Import devices using IP address in inventory database.

None

Updating modules in Catalyst 5000 Switches.

cwConfig does not update or change configurations of individual modules in Catalyst 5000 switches even when import or write2run commands report a successful download. cwConfig updates only supervisor engine module configuration.

None

Module configuration not retrieved even if the module has valid credentials for a CAT switch.

Configuration Management will not retrieve the configuration of the modules which have valid TELNET credentials, if a previous module had wrong credentials.

If in a CAT switch, the supervisor and ATM module have the same credentials and RSM has a different one, Configuration Management will retrieve the configurations of Supervisor, fail for RSM module, and display this message:

ERROR: Incorrect Telnet passwords

It will also fail for ATM module displaying the same error even if it has valid credentials.

CSCdw48650

Startup and running configuration of the active CPU and startup configuration of the standby CPU will not be fetched automatically after a CPU switchover operation.

Syslog messages are not available after a CPU switchover operation, as a result of which the Configuration Management cannot update Config Archive automatically.

Workaround:

1. Perform a manual Update Inventory operation:
Resource Manager Essentials > Administration > Inventory > Update Inventory.

2. Perform an Update Archive operation: Resource Manager Essentials > Configuration Management > Update Archive.

This operation fetches the running configuration of the active CPU.

All configuration related reports might show an incorrect slot as active or standby.

Syslog messages are not available after a CPU switchover operation, as a result of which the Essentials database is not updated automatically. Hence, all configuration related reports might show an incorrect slot as active or standby.

Workaround:

Before launching Config Reports, perform a manual Update Inventory operation:
Resource Manager Essentials > Administration > Inventory > Update Inventory.

CSCin03327

Slot info not updated for Cisco ONS Series (ONS 15540 ESP) devices after a CPU switchover

The Cisco ONS Series (ONS 15540 ESP) series devices do not send syslog switchover messages to the Essentials server, hence the slot information will not be updated in the database.

This also causes Configuration Management not to automatically archive configuration information when there is a switchover on the device.

Workaround:

1. Perform a manual Update Inventory operation: Resource Manager Essentials > Administration > Inventory > Update Inventory

2. Perform a Configuration Update manually.

CSCdp91314

Netshow error:

java.lang.outOfMemory

Netshow might flag a

java.lang.outOfMemory

error on a device. This problem occurs only with specific types of devices and only if the number of threads (set in properties file) and number of devices supplied to the command, are both greater than one.

Workaround:

Run the command line interface application on only the problem device, or reduce number of threads to one, and run serially.

CSCds20036

Launching Copy Job from Job Details window does not work.

Copying a Job from Job Details window might not work sometimes.

Workaround:

Launch copy job from Configuration Management > Network Show commands > BatchReports > Job Browser.

CSCds08146

Allows creation of duplicate command set name, if created from two different clients.

When you create the command set name from two different clients at the same instant, only one command set is created. The error message will not be displayed in the second client from where you attempted to create the command set name.

Workaround:

Again invoke Administration > Configuration Management > Network Show > Define Command Set to solve the problem.

CSCdt14631

Stop Button not working properly in Immediate Execution.

When commands are run for more than one or devices, Stop button might fail rarely when it is pressed repeatedly.

Workaround:

Press the stop button only once to stop the execution of the show commands.

CSCdt24115

Catalyst 5000 Devices: Transport FallBack from TFTP to Telnet Fails.

Catalyst 5000 device says

Device is busy with previous operation, Try
later

when Config Fetch operation is attempted.

The device going into busy state is a feature of the Catalyst 5000 switches and this is to prevent too many TFTP/Telnet connections within short intervals of time.

Workaround:

Change Transport Order to the Telnet as the first protocol.

CSCdv77153

Essentials displays an out of sync error after reload for no scheduler allocate.

After a reload routers may add the following line:

no scheduler allocate

to the running configuration. This confuses the Essentials Startup or Running Out of Sync report.

Workaround:

1. Add the following line:

no scheduler allocate

to the CommandExcludesIos.ini file.

You can find the file at the location:

drive:\Program Files\CSCOpx\objects\
cmf\data\

2. Restart CW2000 again:

net stop crmdmgtd
net start crmdmgtd

CSCds68827

Syslog messages archived in the Configuration archive

Telnet retrieves all the information that is displayed in the telnet session when you try to fetch configuration using telnet. If logging is enabled for sessions, Syslog messages displayed on the telnet session are also archived along with the configuration.

Workaround:

Turn off the display of Syslog messages on telnet session before fetching configurations using TELNET.

CSCdu69242

Configuration archive causes problems when used on terminal servers with menus.

Workaround:

Use RCP for startup configurations and SNMP or TFTP for running configurations.

/opt/CSCOpx/objects/cmf/data/

2. Restart CiscoWorks2000 again:

/etc/init.d/dmgtd stop
/etc/init.d/dmgtd start

CSCdw18195

Inventory Chassis Summary Graph displays misleading information.

Inventory Chassis Summary Graph misleadingly displays CSS11080 for all the models.

When you select Server Configuration > About the server > Applications & Versions, the graph displays all the sysObjectIds of CSS series devices mapped to CSS11080.

Workaround:

None.

Read CSS11080 as CSS11000. For a detailed list of supported CSS11000 models, see "Additional Information Online".

CSCdw48650

For ONS Series (ONS 15540 ESP) devices, Inventory Reports might not reflect the latest device information.

Syslog messages are not available after a CPU switchover operation, as a result of which the Essentials database is not updated automatically.

Workaround:

Perform a manual Update Inventory operation: Resource Manager Essentials > Administration > Inventory > Update Inventory.

CSCdp61331 (1)

Comma included in password will cause device import to fail.

In comma separated value (CSV) format, the "," character is used as a delimiter. Therefore, fields in the CSV file should not contain the "," character.

If you use a "," character in the password or other fields while adding a device, the CSV file generated after exporting will be invalid. An exported CSV file cannot be used for importing devices.

CSCdr02713

Chassis Summary and Software Version Graphs fail.

If you click Chassis Summary Graph or Software Version Graph and select 2000 or more devices, the operation will time out after 5 minutes.

Workaround:

Do not let number of devices exceed 50.

CSCdr81211

When a hitherto managed device is disconnected from the network, Scheduler does not report the status as `Not Responding'.

Once a device has been managed using Essentials, it will not display the status as Unmanaged or Not Responding until you manually delete the device from the inventory.

CSCin06583

DIServer displays error when trying to import more than 1500 device.

When Essentials tries to import data from a file which has more than 1500 devices in a single attempt on Windows in SSL mode the DIServer displays an error, and pdshow hangs.

Workaround:

Import only 1000 devices at a time. If we have more than 1000 devices to be managed, divide the contents of the file to contain not more than 1000 devices at a time.

CSCdk35153

Chassis modem table is not polled correctly.

Inventory reports show only configured modems. There is a time interval between modem installation and modem configuration. During this interval, the Inventory application might detect only one modem. Additionally, log messages might display database integrity violations. These messages can be ignored.

Workaround:

Go to device and configure the modem, then reacquire inventory data.

CSCdm01805

Adding devices to Essentials fails.

Adding devices to Essentials fails if case-insensitive community strings already exist in database. If you add a device to a database with community strings similar to devices already present (the difference is in the use of upper and lower case), the import fails.

Workaround:

1. Change the device to use a credential that has same case (upper or lower) as the successfully managed device.

2. Change the device to use a unique value for credential.

CSCdw68406

Inventory does not handle Cisco ONS Series (ONS 15540 ESP) devices with distinct configurations.

To perform redundancy operations Cisco ONS Series (ONS 15540 ESP) devices requires that both processors have the same configurations.

If they are configured with different set of credentials and a forced switch-over is made and the read community string happens to be different, inventory will not manage the device and the device will go to the not-responding state.

CSCds73696

Memory leak in IcServer

Alias classification fails

Occasionally, devices are listed part of the managed devices, even if the same device (with different name) is already in the managed state.

Workaround:

1. Delete all the duplicate devices from the managed list of devices.

2. Check if the DIServer debug is set to OxFFFFFF in DiServer.log

3. FF in daemons.log.

4. To achieve max debug and have aliasing turned on, set max debug to OxFFFEFFFF.

This will provide the same debug info with that obtained by setting it to OxFFFFFFFF with aliasing turned on.

On Internet Explorer, click Refresh.

CSCdx06315

Inventory shows wrong device status.

When you try to manage a device running Cisco IOS, it sometimes displays the following error:

Check DB Stats (Running/Stopped)

This occurs when the value of ciscoMemoryPoolUsed crosses 4.2 GB and the value cannot be inserted into the Essentials database.

Workaround:

Reload the devices to reset the SNMP counters. Then add the device again.

or

Upgrade the Cisco IOS on the devices.

CSCdx13226

Inventory update does not reflect processing of AUS device

Under Resource Manager Essentials > Administration > Inventory > Update Inventory, select an AUS device and submit for processing.

The IcServer status does not show the processing of AUS devices.

This is because AUS devices are not processed by IcServer. Hence, the processing of these devices is not displayed.

Workaround:

You can check the TimeStamp on the Inventory reports to verify whether update occured.

CSCin07205

Devices with passwrd string containing special characters not managed.

If apostrophe is used in these user fields, database query fails. If comma is used in a CSV format import/export file errors may result as the comma would be treated as a separator. This also applies to telnet and enable passwords.

Workaround:

Do not use special characters such as apostrophe (`), quote (") and comma (,) in user fields and password fields.

CSCdp05515

After an Essentials uninstall, Job Resource Manager does not remove NetConfig jobs.

If you uninstall Essentials 3.x, you might notice NetConfig jobs are still displayed under Server Configuration > Administration > Job Management.

Workaround:

Reinstall Essentials, then remove residual jobs by selecting unwanted jobs and clicking the Remove button.

CSCdr05712

Password template fails to get module configurations.

If you run NetConfig job to change the password on a device and ATM and RMS modules on that device are configured with same telnet and enable passwords. Passwords on those modules and NetConfig job will fail to retrieve module configurations from device.

Workaround:

Select Update Archive for device after NetConfig job is done.

CSCdr50519

Cannot write to startup configuration after changing telnet password.

It is not possible to enable the `Write Running to Startup Configuration' option in a NetConfig job that changes the telnet passwords. For all other templates this works fine. If you enable this job, the job will fail when trying to write the running configuration to startup.

Workaround:

Add an adhoc template that does a `write mem' instead of using the Write Running to Startup Configuration option.

or

A second job can be created with a harmless change and `Write Running to Startup Configuration' option enabled to run after the first one.

Software Management Known Problems

Table 11 Software Management Known Problems

Bug ID
Summary
Explanation

CSCdw48650

For ONS Series (ONS 15540 ESP) devices, Software image recommendation might be performed based on obsolete information.

Syslog messages are not available after a CPU switchover operation, as a result of which the Essentials database is not updated automatically. Software image recommendation is based on data collected by Inventory.

Workaround:

Perform a manual Update Inventory operation: Resource Manager Essentials > Administration > Inventory > Update Inventory.

Software images might be downloaded to a slot for which it was not intended.

If a CPU switchover occurs after a software image distribution job is scheduled, syslog messages are not available for the CPU switchover operation. As a result of this, the Essentials database is not updated automatically. Hence, the software image might be downloaded to a slot for which it was not intended.

Workaround:

Avoid scheduling image distribution jobs. Instead perform jobs immediately.

If image distribution jobs are scheduled, ensure that the CPU does not switchover before the job is completed.

CSCin06524

Reload the device.

Keep the telnet connection alive (open) until the upgrade job is completed.

CSCdr87269

Software Management hangs if inventory contains 5000 or more devices.

If Inventory contains 5000 or more devices, and you select all devices in Software Management, Software Management may hang when device specific queries are issued. It may also generate an error message.

Workaround:

Select a maximum of 50 devices at a time before issuing the queries.

CSCds33889

Image download to and from device with subdirectory fails.

Distribution to a device or an image import job from the device with images in the sub directory fails. While importing the images from the device's subdirectory, Software Management considers the images in the subdirectory and continues to schedule the job but the job displays an error message.

Workaround:

Copy the images that have to be imported from the device to the root directory. For distribution, images are distributed only to the root directory using Software Management.

CSCds66601

Image upgrade is proper but job is reported as error(1900 series).

This occurs while upgrading a 1900 device over a slow network. When the 1900 device upgrade is in progress and exceeds 5 minutes, Software Management assumes that the job has failed as it received no response from the device. This results in Software Management marking the job as failed. However, the upgrade is successful.

CSCdt94486

Software Management does not upgrade Catalyst with backup SUP.

When Software Management upgrades a Catalyst 5509 with backup SUP, Software Management distributes image to the primary SUPs flash in slot 1. However, if the reboot option is selected, the reboot command always causes the backup SUP in slot 2 to boot up first.

Hence the device does not run the upgraded image as expected.

Workaround

Unplug the backup SUP from slot 2 to use the reboot option.

CSCds71189

Software Management upgrade of 2948G router fails when subnet contains 3COM devices.
