Navigating the Cisco ASA 5500 Series Documentation
August 2008
This document roadmap describes the Cisco ASA 5500 series documentation and provides links to access the documentation online. This roadmap includes the following sections:
•
Cisco ASA 5500 Series Documentation
Note
The 4GE SSM software configuration is included in the "Cisco ASA 5500 Series Documentation"; because the 4GE SSM is not an intelligent SSM, its configuration is part of the regular interface configuration.
Before you install any hardware, please read the Regulatory Compliance and Safety Information for your platform, listed in the "Hardware Documentation" section.

Hardware Documentation
Note
Prior to software Version 8.0, we released a separate hardware guide for each software version. These hardware guides are listed under the "Cisco ASA 5500 Series Documentation" section. The hardware information in the non-version specific maintenance guides in this section are also valid for previous versions.

Cisco ASDM Documentation
Starting with ASDM Version 6.1 and later, ASDM is backward-compatible with multiple ASA platform versions. Therefore, this section lists ASDM Versions 6.1 and later separately from the ASA documentation sets in the "Cisco ASA 5500 Series Documentation" section. For earlier versions of ASDM documentation, see the "Cisco ASA 5500 Series Documentation" section.
Note
The documentation for a given ASDM version includes the feature set for the latest ASA platform version. For example, ASDM Version 6.1 supports ASA Version 8.0 and Version 8.1, so the ASDM guide includes all of the features for ASA Version 8.1. ASA Version 8.0 users do not have a separate guide that includes only Version 8.0 platform features.
ASDM 6.1 Documentation Set
ASDM 6.1 supports ASA 8.0, PIX 8.0, and ASA 8.1.

Cisco CSC SSM Documentation
The CSC SSM runs a separate application from the adaptive security appliance. It is, however, integrated into the adaptive security appliance traffic flow. To configure the CSC SSM, you need to configure both the security appliance and the CSC SSM separately.
For hardware information see the "Hardware Documentation" section. To get started configuring the SSM for use with the ASA 5500 adaptive security appliance, including sending traffic to the CSC SSM, see the ASDM or CLI configuration guide for your ASA version in the "Cisco ASA 5500 Series Documentation" section.
To configure CSC features on the CSC SSM operating system, see the following documentation:

Cisco AIP SSM Documentation
The AIP SSM runs a separate application from the adaptive security appliance. It is, however, integrated into the adaptive security appliance traffic flow. To configure the AIP SSM, you need to configure both the security appliance and the AIP SSM separately.
For hardware information see the "Hardware Documentation" section. To get started configuring the SSM for use with the ASA 5500 adaptive security appliance, including sending traffic to the AIP SSM, see the ASDM or CLI configuration guide for your ASA version in the "Cisco ASA 5500 Series Documentation" section.
To configure IPS features on the AIP SSM operating system, see the following documentation (the AIP SSM runs the same IPS software as the IPS 4200 series sensors):
