This preface describes the objectives, audience, organization, and conventions of the
Voice Interworking Service Module Installation and Configuration, Release 2.0.
Objectives
ThisVoice Interworking Service Module Installation and Configuration, Release 2.0.provides details of the features, functions, construction, installation, operation and Command Line Interface of the Cisco Voice Interworking Service Module (VISM) Release 2.0.
Audience
This publication is designed for the person installing VISM cards on the MGX 8850 shelf, who should be familiar with electronic circuitry and wiring practices and have experience as an electronic or electromechanical technician. It is also intended for the network administrator who will configure the MGX 8850 shelf. The installers and network administrators should also be familiar with Cisco switches and routers, T1 and E1 voice lines, and Cisco wide area networks. During the initial installation of an MGX 8850 shelf, it is also helpful to have a system administrator on-hand who is familiar with your network and UNIX servers.
Organization
The major sections of this document are as follows:

Chapter 1, "Introduction," a general overall introduction to the Voice Interworking Service Module (VISM).
•Chapter 2, "Installation," a description of how to insall the VISM front and back cards in an MGX 8850 shelf. Installation procedures for installing new software/firmware are also included..
•Chapter 3, "General Description," a description of the hardware and software features and the functions of VISM.
•Chapter 4, "Tandem Switch Application," a description of how VISM can beconfigured to perform as a tandem switch.
•Chapter 5, "Mult-service Access Application," a description of how VISM can be configured to perform as a multi-service access device.
•Chapter 6, "AAL2 Trunking Application," a description of how VISM can be configured to perform a one end of an AAL2 trunk.
•Chapter 7, "Command Line Interface,"a description of the syntax and semantics of each command in the VISM command line interface repertoire.
•Chapter 8, "Troublshooting," a description of the troubleshooting tools that are available in VISM.
•Appendix A, "Cabling Summary," a description of the cables required for connecting T1 and E1 lines to the VISM card.
•Appendix B, "Specification," a specification of the VISM release 2.0.
•Appendix C, "VISM Clocking," a description of the VISM clocking options and how to configure VISM and the MGX 8850 shelf for correct clocking operation.

•Commands and keywords are in boldface.
•Arguments for which you supply values are in italics.
•Elements in square brackets ([ ]) are optional.
•Alternative but required keywords are grouped in braces ({ }) and are separated by vertical bars ( | ).
Examples use these conventions:
•Terminal sessions and information the system displays are in screen font.
•Information you enter is in boldface screen font.
•Non-printing characters, such as passwords, are in angle brackets (< >).
•Default responses to system prompts are in square brackets ([ ]).
Note Means reader take note. Notes contain helpful suggestions or references to materials not contained in this manual.
