RAN Optimization

Introduction

Cut Operating Costs with RAN Optimization

RAN backhaul transport is a major expense for mobile service operators. The Cisco Mobile Wireless Router (MWR) provides GSM/UMTS optimization, producing efficiency gains of 50 percent on average for second-generation traffic and 15 to 90 percent for third-generation (3G) traffic. (3G gains depend on the voice/data mix as well as actual usage.) In addition, Cisco MWR extends Cisco IOS software features like quality of service and IP routing to the cell site.

Cisco MWR is capable of simultaneously routing HSDPA traffic via alternative backhaul media such as Metro Ethernet and xDSL. The result: Cisco MWR provides tangible cost reductions and enables rapid provisioning of 3G media-rich content.

Other MWR router capabilities include:

  • IP-PoP extended to the cell site (for IP-based services like P-VPN)
  • Remote telemetry for efficient operation
  • 3GPP R5/R6 compliance

The MWR with optimization and HSDPA off-load is part of the Cisco Next-Generation RAN Portfolio.
