Layer 2

Introduction

Increase Services While You Decrease Costs

The Cisco Layer 2 VPN Solution enables any existing or emerging Layer 2 transport technology to work over your converged native IP or Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) architecture.

Over time, your benefits can be substantial:

  • Lower operating expenses: Reducing the platforms and legacy networks that you need to deploy and manage can consolidate OSSs and reduce network management costs overall
  • Lower capital expenditures: Capping investments in legacy network Layer 2 gear reduces the number of platform types you need to support

The diagram below represents the Layer 2 VPN model and the transport services it provides:

Cisco Layer 2 VPN architecture provides a point-to-point tunnel (pseudowire) between two provider edge (PE) nodes. PE devices reside at either end of the pseudowire and encapsulate the Layer 2 payloads and transport service between PE nodes.

Cisco Layer 2 VPN solutions are applicable when:

  • You have existing Layer 2 deployments, such as Frame Relay and ATM
  • You want to extend your product portfolio and offer new classes of Layer 2 transport services such as transparent LAN services (TLS) over a common packet backbone

Cisco Layer 2 VPN solutions provide enabling technologies for any network infrastructure including MPLS-enabled IP backbones or ones utilizing native IP in the core. Any Transport over MPLS (AToM) and L2TPv3 (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol) are enabling technologies to address both types of infrastructures.
