Product Overview

Cisco Unified Service Monitor 2.0 is part of the Cisco Unified Communications management suite. It provides a low-cost, reliable method of monitoring and evaluating the quality of voice in Cisco Unified Communications solutions. It continuously monitors active calls supported by the Cisco Unified Communications system and provides near-real-time notification when the voice quality of a call, represented as end-user experience expressed by a mean opinion score (MOS), fails to meet a user-defined quality threshold. It also provides a variety of reports that characterize the user experience as measured by the system and provide details on the endpoints that are most frequently related to voice-quality alerts.
The Cisco Unified Service Monitor voice -quality solution consists of central Cisco Unified Service Monitor software and Cisco 1040 Sensor hardware. The Cisco 1040 Sensor can be deployed in campus and remote locations such as branch offices to analyze voice-specific Rapid Transport Protocol (RTP) data streams and calculate a MOS value for each stream. The end-user experience is captured, analyzed, and reported every 60 seconds. The Cisco 1040 Sensor is the required hardware for the Cisco Unified Service Monitor application software.
The Cisco Unified Service Monitor application software operates on a Windows Server 2003 platform and receives voice-quality information from Cisco 1040 Sensors and Cisco Unified CallManager 4.2 or 5.0 systems. Users can configure MOS thresholds on a per-codec basis; alerts are sent to an upstream application such as Cisco Unified Operations Manager when a MOS threshold is violated. It allows users to understand service-quality experience at a system level through Cisco Voice Transmission Quality (VTQ) support and in real-time through Cisco 1040 Sensors.
Table 1 describes the primary features of Cisco Unified Service Monitor 2.0.

Feature

Description

Voice-quality monitoring

Provides end-user experience information for active calls in the Cisco Unified Communications system. The Cisco 1040 Sensors provide real-time user experience metrics every 60 seconds for monitored active calls expressed as a MOS. Further, phone-based Cisco VTQ support provides user experience metrics at the end of all active calls in the network expressed as a MOS.

Voice-quality alerts

Analyzes RTP streams flowing between Cisco Unified IP phones, a gateway, and/or telephony service such as voice mail and generates notifications if the user-defined MOS threshold has been violated.

Ease of installation and use

Cisco 1040 sensors are configured and installed in a manner similar to Cisco Unified IP phones. They use Power over Ethernet (PoE) using the IEEE 802.3af standard and obtain configuration information from a Trivial FTP (TFTP) server.

Most Impacted Endpoints Report

This report helps identify and isolate the endpoints that are experiencing voice-quality issues.

Troubleshooting

Tight integration with Cisco Unified Operations Manager offers the ability to simulate synthetic voice traffic using the Cisco IOS® IP Service-Level Agreements (SLA) feature and to perform path analysis between the devices where the endpoints are connected.

Scalability

A single instance of Cisco Unified Service Monitor 2.0, when licensed to do so, can support up to 30,000 IP phones or up to 30 Cisco Unified CallManager clusters.

Northbound interface

Supports SNMP trap notifications that can be sent to Cisco Unified Operations Manager or to "manager of managers" applications.

Customized threshold settings based on location and codecs

Plug-and-play setup with default threshold values set for each codec. Offers the ability to define customized threshold settings based on endpoints in different locations.

Upgrade Paths

Customers currently using Cisco Unified Service Monitor 1.x are encouraged to update their software to Cisco Unified Operations Manager 2.0.

Pricing and Availability

Cisco Unified Service Monitor 2.0 and associated major upgrade kits will begin shipping on December 21, 2006. Customers can order these new products through normal Cisco sales channels as of November 16, 2006.
