Product Bulletin No. 495460
This document provides a product overview and guidance on how to order and configure the Cisco® Metro Ethernet 4500 system with its respective hardware and software components.
Overview of the Cisco Catalyst 4500 Metro Supervisor Engine 6-E
The Cisco Catalyst 4500 Metro Supervisor Engine 6-E is the next-generation metro supervisor engine for the Catalyst 4500 Series modular switches and is based on the Catalyst 4500 Supervisor Engine 6-E. It delivers industry-leading Ethernet Virtual Circuit (EVC) infrastructure for scaling up the network, Ethernet bridging, intelligent hierarchical QoS, VLAN scaling, ring protection, and Ethernet manageability for service provider customers.
The Metro Supervisor Engine 6-E provides hardware acceleration of intelligent services for the Metro Ethernet market such as Ethernet Bridging and intelligent per-device, per-subscriber, per-service QoS for triple-play deployments, in addition to the services performed by the Metro Supervisor Engine 6-E, giving service providers superior flexibility for their service deployments.
Ordering the Cisco Metro Ethernet 4500 System Hardware
This section describes how to order the Metro Ethernet 4500 system hardware components. The Metro Ethernet hardware on the Catalyst 4500 Series comprises chassis, supervisor engine, power supply, and line cards.
Chassis, Power Supply, and Fan Tray
The Metro Supervisor Engine 6-E is supported on all classic and E-Series chassis, including the redundant-supervisor-capable chassis such as the Catalyst 4507R, Catalyst 4510R, Catalyst 4507R-E, and Catalyst 4510R-E. When the Metro Supervisor Engine 6-E is deployed with the classic chassis, throughput per slot is 6 Gbps, and when deployed with the E-Series chassis, throughput per slot is 24 Gbps.
All available power supplies are supported on all Catalyst 4500 Series chassis, although the power calculator should be used to determine the optimal power supply for a specific chassis configuration. The chassis can be deployed with either a single or dual AC or DC power supply, although a mix of one AC and one DC power supply is not supported.
When the Metro Supervisor Engine 6-E (ME-SUP6-E) is used in a Catalyst 4500 Series classic chassis, the classic fan tray needs to be upgraded to the higher-speed fan tray listed in Table 1.

Supervisor Engine and Line Cards
The Metro Supervisor Engine 6-E by default comes with 1G of DRAM. The redundant Metro Supervisor Engine 6-E can be ordered for the redundant-capable chassis (C4507R, C4510R, C4507R-E, and C4510R-E) using part number ME-X45-Sup6-E/2. Two TwinGig converters to convert the 10G interface to two 1G interfaces are included with each Metro Supervisor Engine 6-E, and optics for the Metro Supervisor Engine 6-E can be ordered separately using the online ordering tool.
The Metro Supervisor Engine 6-E supports a wide range of Ethernet line cards for Metro Ethernet deployments. Power over Ethernet (PoE) line cards, however, are not supported on this supervisor engine.
The new 24-port fiber hierarchal QoS (HQoS)-capable line card (ME-X4624-SFP-E) supports three-level hierarchical policing for a triple-play deployment. If the three-level hierarchical policing functionality is not needed, then the 24-port fiber line card (WS-X4624-SFP-E) is an option.
Ordering the Cisco Catalyst 4500 Metro Ethernet Software
The Metro Supervisor Engine 6-E software is available in two software packages: IP Base and Enterprise Services.
