Q. What is the expected release date for the Cisco® Video Surveillance Services Platforms for mass storage?
A. These products are orderable now.
Q. What are the products exactly?
A. Cisco Video Surveillance Services Platforms are devices with external output connections to enable connectivity to mass storage arrays. Industry-standard Fibre Channel and SCSI versions are available.
Q. Why choose these products over Services Platforms with integrated storage on board?
A. Capacity. Video platforms with onboard storage are currently limited to approximately 4 to 6 terabytes based on the number and capacity of their internal hard drives. The ability to connect to external mass storage devices significantly increases the total storage capacity.
Q. Why the difference between Fibre Channel and SCSI? Why would I select one over the other?
A. Fibre Channel and SCSI versions are available to match the connectivity options provided by your external mass storage device. SCSI is an older and slower specification, but is arguably more common. However, Fibre Channel is fast and has evolved to become the preferred standard.
Q. What is the maximum storage capacity that the Services Platforms support?
A. For maximum storage capacity, use the Fibre Channel mass storage device. This device supports up to two external storage arrays of any capacity. The current maximum storage capacity that external arrays provide is approximately 20 terabytes. So the Fibre Channel mass storage device can support up to 40 terabytes of storage.
Q. What markets can benefit from the Services Platforms for mass storage?
A. The Services Platforms provide solutions for any market that requires the ability to store large amounts of video data. These markets include the gaming industry, which needs to store large amounts of high-quality video images, and enterprise and retail organizations, which need to store large amounts of video data in third-party data center disk arrays.
