End-of-Sale and End-of-Life Announcement for Cisco NM-8AM and NM-16AM Analog Modem Network Modules

Cisco Systems^® announces the end of life of the Cisco^® NM-8AM and NM-16AM analog modem network modules. The last day to order the Cisco NM-8AM and NM-16AM is October 13, 2004. Customers will continue to receive support from the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) until October 13, 2009. Table 1 describes the end-of-life milestones, definitions, and dates for the Cisco NM-8AM and NM-16AM.

Customers are encouraged to migrate to Cisco NM-8AM-V2 and NM-16AM-V2 analog modem network modules, which provide most of the features of the NM-8AM and NM-16AM plus added support for the 56k dial protocols, V.90 and V.92. Information about this product can be found at:

Table 3 provides relevant information for migrating from the Cisco NM-8AM and NM-16AM to the Cisco NM-8AM-V2 and NM-16AM-V2.

End of new service attachment date	For equipment and software that is not covered by a service-and-support contract, this is the last date to order a new service-and-support contract or add the equipment and/or software to an existing service-and-support contract.	October 13, 2005
End of service contract renewal date	The last date to extend or renew a service contract for the product. The extension or renewal period cannot extend beyond the last date of support.	July 13, 2009
Last date of support	The last date to receive service and support for the product. After this date, all support services for the product are unavailable, and the product becomes obsolete.	October 13, 2009

Product Migration Options

The recommended replacement for the Cisco NM-8AM and NM-16AM are the Cisco NM-8AM-V2 and NM-16AM-V2 (Table 3).

The NM-8AM-V2 and NM-16AM-V2 offer the following important advantages over the NM-8AM and NM-16AM:

•Connection speeds up to 56 kilobits per second (kbps) (per International Telecommunication Unit [ITU]-T V.90 specification)

•ITU-T V.92 Quick Connect—V.92 Quick Connect speeds, client-to-server startup, reducing connect time by up to 30 percent.

•ITU-T V.44 compression—V.44 Lempel-Ziv-Jeff-Heath (LZJH) is a new compression standard based on Lempel-Ziv. V.44 LZJH yields better compression rates in almost any data stream than V.42bis.

•Modem Management Technology License (MMTL) now included—The MMTL provides for modem statistics, real-time call-in-progress, monitoring modem activity log, modem hard/soft busy out, and the ability to accomplish modem firmware upgrades. This feature carried an additional charge per port on the NM-8AM and NM-16AM models but is included without additional cost on the NM-8AM-V2 and NM-16AM-V2.

The Cisco TMP application requires all users to have a Cisco.com user ID.

Customers may be able to continue to purchase the Cisco NM-8AM and NM-16AM through the Cisco Authorized Refurbished Equipment program. Refurbished units of the Cisco NM-8AM and NM-16AM are available in limited supply for sale in certain countries on a first-come-first-serve basis.
