Software Features

Table 2   Software Release 1.1(1) Software Features

Software Feature  Description
Cisco software drivers for iSCSI Initiators

Please refer to:

http://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/sn5420-scsi

for a list of Cisco iSCSI software drivers supported by IP Services Module.

iSCSI Gateway Mapping Functions
  • Dynamic and persistent mapping of iSCSI Hosts to Virtual FC Hosts. The WWN of Virtual N-Ports can be either assigned from MDS's WWN pool or they can be user defined.
  • Dynamic and persistent mappings of FC Targets to Virtual iSCSI Targets.
iSCSI Target Discovery

iSCSI target discovery based on "SendTargets" command executed in the discovery phase.

LUN Mapping

Map LUNs between FC Targets and virtual iSCSI Targets when configuring persistent mappings.

Zoning-Based Access Controls for iSCSI Initiators

Zoning specification based on: (a) WWN of iSCSI Initiator (b) IQN of iSCSI Initiator (c) IP address of iSCSI Initiator. Zoning is enforced during iSCSI target discovery and session creation, and on a per-frame basis in hardware.

Access Control for iSCSI Targets

Access controls by explicitly configuring the allowed list of iSCSI Initiators that can connect to a iSCSI Targets that have been configured with persistent mapping. The ACLs configuration is based on: (a) IQN of iSCSI Initiator (b) IP address of iSCSI Initiator (c) Subnet of the iSCSI initiator.

Authentication of iSCSI Initiators

CHAP based authentication of both iSCSI Initiator and target using a local database or a centralized RADIUS server.

Assigning iSCSI Initiators to VSANs
  • With persistent mapping an iSCSI Initiator can be assigned to a VSAN based on its IQN or IP address.
  • For dynamic mapping, all iSCSI Initiators are automatically assigned to VSAN 1.
Virtual E-Port Capability for FCIP Links

FCIP links are configured as Virtual E-Ports (VE-Port), which behave exactly like standard FC E-Port, except that the transport in this case is FCIP instead of FC.

VSANs over FCIP Links

VSANs are carried over FCIP Link using Cisco's Enhanced Inter-Switch Link (EISL) over VE-Ports.

High-Availability (HA) for iSCSI Initiators

Exports a FC Target as virtual iSCSI Targets on multiple IP interfaces (paths). The interfaces can be on different IPS modules in a switch or IPS modules in different switches. The multipathing software on iSCSI Initiator can use these multiple paths either for load balancing and/or High-Availability.

HA for FC Targets

Maps a pair of active and standby FC Targets to a single virtual iSCSI Target. When active FC Target fails, the traffic is transparently re-directed to standby FC Target.

Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP)

VRRP based resiliency of iSCSI sessions and FCIP links that can span multiple IPS modules in a MDS 9000 switch or different MDS switches.

EtherChannel

EtherChannel of 2-adjacent IPS ports for link level resiliency.

Device Interoperability

Interoperate with B-Port devices such as Cisco's FC Port Adapter (PA-FC-1G) and SN5428-2 Storage Router.

Number of FCIP Links

Up to three (3) VSAN-aware FCIP links per IPS port.

FCIP PortChannel(s)

Bundling of multiple FCIP links in a PortChannel for increased bandwidth and resiliency.

TCP Parameters

TCP Parameters: (a) SACK (b) Window Management (c) Connection keep alive (d) Path MTU (PMTU) discovery (e) Initial Re-transmission timeout (f) Max number of re-transmissions.

Jumbo Frames

Ability to configure jumbo frames on Gigabit Ethernet Ports with MTU of 9000 bytes.

QoS

Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP) tag to mark all iSCSI/FCIP frames going over the IP network.

VLANs

802.1q based VLANs tagging of Ethernet frames.

Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP)

CDP protocol on IPS and Out-of-Band Ethernet Management port.

Ability to execute a CLI EXEC mode command in configuration mode

Using the "do" command, a user can execute an EXEC mode command from a configuration mode or submode prompt.

Management Information Bases (MIBs)

This release supports the following additional MIBs

CISCO-FCIP-MGMT-MIB
