Introduction
This document details the voice hardware components supported on the Cisco 7200, 7300, 7400, and 7500 high-end voice gateway platforms. It also provides guidance on the software release and feature sets that support these hardware components.

How the Cisco IOS Software release process works in general. Specifically, the caveats associated with the use of early deployment releases when required by a particular voice feature or hardware component.
This document provides no guidance in these areas.
Components Used
The information in this document relates to a range of hardware and software versions supported by the Cisco high-end voice gateway platforms.
The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.

High-End Voice Gateway and Module Support
This table shows the relationship between high-end routers, their module support, and their capacity to be voice gateways.

Cisco 7600 and Catalyst 6000 Families both support FlexWAN modules that are populated with PAs. Both families also support specialized Optical Service Modules (OSM)s. |

Versatile Interface Processors (VIP-x) are populated with Port Adapters (PAs). |

Cisco 7400 Series 2 |
PAs are supported directly with no VIPs. |

Cisco 7300 Series 3 |
Specialized Line Cards for the Cisco 7304. No support for PAs or VIPs. The Cisco 7301 supports PAs directly with no VIPs. |

PAs are supported directly with no VIPs. |

PAs are supported directly with no VIPs. |
1 Cisco 7600 does not support voice, since the FlexWAN Module does not support voice PAs and no OSM cards currently support voice. There are Catalyst 6000 CatOS-based cards that do support voice. These are discussed in Voice Hardware Compatibility Matrix (Cisco 175x, 1760, 2600, 3600, 3700, Catalyst 4000, Catalyst 6000).
2 Voice port adapters are supported on Cisco 7401 ASR-BB and 7401 ASR-CP. Voice port adapters are not supported on the Cisco 7401 ASR-GW.
3 Only the Cisco 7301 supports voice.
4 Cisco 7100 platform family does not support voice.

First Supported Software
This table shows the Cisco IOS Software release levels per platform to first support the specified voice PA. For updated information on more recent images, refer to the Software Advisor ( registered customers only) . All IOS feature sets of appropriate release level, except for the Enterprise Multimedia Conference Manager (MCM) Images, provide support for specified PAs.

1 Requires Route Switch Processor (RSP) 2, RSP4 (which is now End of Sale [EOS]), RSP4+ or RSP8.
2 Voice over Frame Relay is supported on the Cisco 7500 series router from Cisco IOS Software Release 12.1(5)T and later.
3 Cisco 7576 is now EOS. Refer to Product Bulletin 1291 for more information.
4 The VIP2-40 and VIP2-50 are now EOS. Refer to Product Bulletins 2340 and 1868 for more information.
5 PA-VXC and PA-VXB port adapters are not supported in Cisco 7200 routers with a Network Processor Engine (NPE) 100 installed.

7 Non-enhanced PAs (without "+") are now EOS. Refer to Product Bulletin 1175 for more information.

10 Cisco IOS Software Release 12.1(2)T is also supported to allow customers to upgrade to enhanced cards, but initial support for the Cisco IOS Software 12.1T release train was in Cisco IOS Software Release 12.1(3)T.
