Introduction

The purpose of this configuration cookbook is to provide end-to-end configuration examples for a variety of designs centered around the MGX 8250/8230 WAN switch. In this cookbook, the necessary steps are outlined for configuring the customer premises equipment (CPE) devices (routers) and the Cisco MGX 8250/8230 to establish connectivity for a particular application. We cannot cover all of the possible combinations that one might encounter in the field. However, the connection types (Service Module-to-Service Module, Route Processor Module (RPM)-to-Service Module, Service Module-to-Processor Switching Module (PXM) Trunk, and RPM-to-PXM Trunk) and the node endpoints (ATM user service module (AUSM), Frame Relay Service Module (FRSM), Circuit Emulation Service Module (CESM), RPM, and PXM) illustrated in this document should allow you to understand the basic techniques and to apply those techniques in situations not covered by this document.

This document is part one of a six document set:

Requirements

There are no specific requirements for this document.

Components Used

The information in this document is based on these software and hardware versions:

Note: In the examples shown the actual nodes being used are MGX8250s. However the configurations apply to both the MGX8250 and the MGX8230.

Routers

The following routers serve as CPE devices in these configurations:

  • RPM

  • Cisco MC3810, both the analog voice module (AVM) and the digital voice module (DVM)

  • Cisco 3620

  • Cisco 2621

  • Cisco 7576

  • Cisco 7206

All of the routers are running Cisco IOSĀ® Software Release 12.0(5)T, with the exception of the wsw-7206c router that is running Cisco IOS 12.0(4)XE in order to accommodate the Inverse Multiplexing for ATM (IMA) port adapter.

MGX 8850 Firmware

The following cards are used on the MGX 8250/8230 nodes in these examples. The table also includes the firmware level under which the card operates.

Background Information

To benefit from this document, you should already be familiar with the MGX 8250/8230 switch. For background information on installation and configuration of the MGX 8250/8230 switch or the routers involved with these examples, consult the Cisco MGX 8250/8230 documentation and the Cisco IOS Release 12.0 Software Configuration information on Cisco Connection Online (CCO).

The MGX 8250/8230 operates as an ATM switch. Traffic shaping and policing are integral parts of the configuration. The shaping and policing choices made in these examples may or may not be suitable for use in a production network. The administrator implementing the designs using this equipment should first understand the traffic requirements for the application and then choose the appropriate parameters.
