Introduction

This document describes the procedure for upgrading System Controller Module (SCM) software on a Cisco 6100/6130 Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) with NI-1. The upgrade is performed over a serial port.

Step-by-Step Upgrade Procedure

In this section, you are presented with the information to configure the features described in this document. The SCM upgrade consists of the following two processes:

  • Clearing the Memory

  • Downloading the Image

Step-by-Step Instructions for Clearing NVRAM on the Cisco 6100/6130

Follow the steps below to clear NVRAM on the Cisco 6100/6130.

  1. Select 1. Display Diagnostics Status

    If the Flash image status is INVALID, perform the following steps:

    1. On the main menu type 999 (privileged access)

    2. When prompted to enter a password, type ADSL SPEED (note the space between ADSL and SPEED)

    3. Select 12. Access Memory Devices

  2. Erase the Flash and NVRAM

    To erase the Flash and NVRAM, perform the following steps:

    1. Select 2. Erase all flash space

    2. Select 3. Zero NVRAM spare

    3. Select 0. Exit

  3. When you are prompted to reset the hardware, type YES and perform the following steps:

    1. Select 2. Modify IP address

    2. Select 3. Modify Subnet Mask

    3. Select 4. Modify Gateway Address

    4. Select 5. Modify Server Ip Address

    5. Select 6. Save IP Values to EEPROM

    6. Type 0 to exit

    7. At the Hardware Reset? prompt, type y for yes.

  4. Set the TFTP path and file to load

    1. On the main menu type 999 (privileged access)

    2. When prompted to enter a password, type ADSL SPEED

    3. Select 9. Set TFTP Path & File to Load

  5. Enter the new bootfile and new bootpath

    Note: You must use the correct filename and a "/" must be at the end of the pathname

Step-by-Step Instructions for Downloading the Cisco 6100/6130 SCM Image

The steps below continue after step 5 above.

  1. Select 0 to exit

  2. At the Hardware Reset? prompt, type n for no

If the download process fails, follow the steps below.

Troubleshooting Procedure

Below is troubleshooting information relevant to this configuration.

  1. Verify the following:

    1. ViewRunner is running

    2. The path for image downloads is correct

    3. A "/" is the last character in the path name

    4. The correct IP addresses on the Cisco 6100 are set

  2. Start ViewRunner then return to the HyperTerminal screen

  3. At the > prompt issue the show alarms command

If you see that the two images do not exist, repeat the download procedure.
