Introduction
CiscoWorks for Mobile Wireless is a suite of element management system (EMS) applications that enhances the delivery of new mobile wireless services by taking advantage of Cisco mobility platforms. It is based on CiscoWorks and is intended to address the element management requirements of mobile wireless service providers and to provide fault, configuration, accounting, performance, and security (FCAPS) functionality as they transition their service delivery networks from second-generation (2G) circuit-based traffic to 2.5G and 3G IP-based services.
This solution set extends the benefits of the CiscoWorks family of software, used around the world for years by service providers, to the mobile wireless industry. See Figure 1.
Features
CiscoWorks for Mobile Wireless focuses on four main management areas:
LAN Management
The LAN Management Solution (LMS) bundle provides operationally focused applications for configuration, fault monitoring, and troubleshooting local networks. A browser interface provides easy-to-use access to topology maps, configuration services, and important system, device, and performance information. Because these applications are browser accessible, administrators now have the freedom to access network tools anywhere from within the network.
Routed WAN Management
The Routed WAN Management Solution bundle provides a collection of powerful applications to configure, administer, monitor, and troubleshoot routed wide-area networks, thereby dramatically reducing their complexity. This suite of solution applications provides increased visibility into network behavior and quickly identifies performance bottlenecks and long-term performance trends. It also provides sophisticated configuration tools to optimize bandwidth and utilization across expensive and critical WAN links in the network. Finally, it can receive and analyze information collected by Remote Monitoring (RMON) devices, adding value to existing probe investments.
Access Point Name Management
For GPRS networks (only), the Cisco APN Manager provides a CiscoWorks Web-based graphical user interface (GUI) and a flow-through application programming interface (API) to provision access point names (APNs) within the GPRS Support Node (GSN) complex to support centralized public data network (PDN) access. It provides a Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) interface to view and configure APN profiles in the GGSN and Domain Name System (DNS) resource record from network management systems (NMSs) and other third-party operations support systems (OSSs).
Fault Mediation
The Cisco Mobile Wireless Fault Mediator (MWFM) provides alarm filtering and correlation to the Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) routers or Packet Data Service Node (PDSN) routers in code division multiple access (CDMA) networks and their neighboring Cisco Catalyst® switches. It also provides an integration for the CiscoWorks GUI to view and sort alarms. In addition, MWFM seamlessly integrates with network and service-layer fault OSSs to provide a complete network monitoring solution.
CSG Provisioning
The Cisco Content Signalling Gateway (CSG) Provisioning Manager provides a web-based GUI to configure the CSG. Cisco CSG Provisioning Manager seamlessly configures user-aware accounting and content billing attributes to the Cisco Catalyst 6500 switch and the Cisco 7600 router. It provides a user-friendly interfaces that automates and simplifies the CSG configuration process.
