Introduction

As a Cisco Works user who uses the CiscoView application for the first time, you have an empty device list. The preferences are the default ones. To pre-populate the user preferences and device list, create a master copy of these files and duplicate these files to the appropriate location. These are the instructions to pre-populate these files.

The information in this document is based on CiscoView 5.x.

The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.

Procedure For CiscoView 5.0 (CD 1, First Edition)

File location: Preferences and the Device List are stored on each client web browser machine. Confirm the location of the files from the Java Console after the CiscoView splash screen is displayed.

These are sample outputs in the Java console: 

To open the Java Console on the Netscape web browser, from the 
menu bar select Communicator - Tools - Java Console

To open the Java Console on the Internet Explorer web browser, 
from the menu bar select View - Java Console

Other examples of sample output are:

  • From Microsoft Windows NT with Internet Explorer web browser:

    Env.getSystemProperty() : property=user.home 
getFileInputStream--C:\WINNT\Java\Preference 
getFileInputStream--C:\WINNT\Java\RecentDevices

  • From Microsoft Windows 95/98 with Internet Explorer web browser: 

    Env.getSystemProperty() : property=user.home 
getFileInputStream--C:\WINDOWS\Java\Preference 
getFileInputStream--C:\WINDOWS\Java\RecentDevices

  • From Microsoft Windows NT/Win95/Win98 with Netscape web browser: 

    Env.getSystemProperty() : property=user.home

  • From SUN Solaris with Netscape web browser: 

    Env.getSystemProperty() : property=user.home

    These files are stored as serialized Java class.

Step-by-Step Procedure

Complete these steps:

  1. Bring up a CiscoView session.

  2. Bring up the Preference dialogue window. Assign settings for the Master User Preferences file (Preference).

  3. Use the same CiscoView session to open all the devices that are supposed to be included in the Master Device List (RecentDevices). The master copies of these files are found under the corresponding directory on the client machine as described in File location.

  4. Copy these master files to each client machine under the corresponding directory as described in File location.

  5. Restart the browser on each client machine.

Procedure For CiscoView 5.1 through 5.5 (CD 1, Second through Fifth Editions and Common Services 2.2)

File location: Preferences and the Device List are stored centrally on the Cisco Works server machine. The file locations are under these directories:

  • For UNIX systems: /CSCOpx/www/classpath/cvuserprefs

  • For Microsoft Windows systems: \Program Files\CSCOpx\www\classpath\cvuserprefs

Examples of the files are "admin.Preference" and "admin.RecentDevices" where "admin" is the Cisco Works user ID.

Step-by-Step Procedure

Complete these steps:

  1. Bring up a CiscoView session.

  2. Bring up a Preference dialogue window. Assign settings for the Master User Preferences file (.Preference).

  3. Use the same CiscoView session to open all the devices that are supposed to be included in the Master Device list (.RecentDevices). The master copies of these files are found under the corresponding directory on the Cisco Works server machine as described in File location.

  4. Copy these master files for each Cisco Works user ID in the same directory. Change the user ID portion of the files accordingly.

  5. Issue these commands to restart the WebServer and the JRun engine on the Cisco Works server:

    • For UNIX systems: 

      /CSCOpx/bin/pdterm WebServer
/CSCOpx/bin/pdexec JRunProxyServer

    • For Microsoft Windows systems: 

      pdterm WebServer 
pdexec JRunProxyServer
