Early Deployment (ED) Release Summary
Description |
Cisco IOS® Software Release 12.0S is directly pulled from the Cisco IOS 12.0 mainline. It officially supports the Cisco 7200, Cisco 7500, and Cisco 12000 platforms. The primary objective of Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0S is to become the core release running in Internet backbones. As such, Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0S was initially released to the Internet Service Provider (ISP) community. It provides the combination of features, performance, and platform support required by the ISP community.
Starting with Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0(5)S in July 1999, Cisco will produce this release and make it available to the entire networking community. Since Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0S is focused on stability, it is conservative in how and when both features and platforms are integrated to maintenance releases. However, all features of Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0S to 12.0(4)S will be available in Cisco IOS 12.0(5)T and 12.0(6)T. Subsequent features may be ported to Cisco IOS Software Release 12.1T in late 1999. For example, secured shell (SSH), which first appeared in Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0(5)S, will be available in Cisco IOS 12.1(1)T. The Routing with Resource Reservation (RRR) (Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) traffic engineering) feature of Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0(5)S will be ported to 12.0(6)T. |

Interim and Throttle Builds |
Interim Builds are for test purposes only, and are usually not fully tested. These builds are NOT recommended for download to customer networks. Customers Throttle Builds are created to minimize collateral risk by including only customer impacting fixes. The focus is to obtain a level of stability and improved quality. |

Recommended Migration |
The recommended migration path is not as straightforward as one would like. Look into the hardware, protocols, and features used, along with software defects to verify the above recommendation will work for your unique network. For more information on forecast of new releases see the Projected Release Dates for Cisco IOS Software Product Bulletin. Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0S is a unique release that will not migrate into a main release (such as Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0T, 12.1, and 12 1T). Features released in Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0S will be double committed into another release to make it into the mainline release in the future.
