MajesticInvites.com began as a home-based business selling brand-name invitations. To expand the business, Alina Uzilov, realized that she would need to create an e-commerce site, but she also realized that to be successful, she would have to introduce products that were unique in the invitations market, such as elaborate scrolls for weddings and Bar Mitzvahs. To differentiate her company, she hired a team of search engine optimization experts in India — whom she never met — so that when prospects entered certain keywords and phrases (scroll, sweet-16) into search engines such as Google, her site would come up. The result: between 2004 to 2006, her sales increased from $25,000 to $150,000 annually.

In addition, Uzilov uses online conferencing technologies to meet with vendors in countries as far away as the Philippines, China, Pakistan, and India. This allows her to market products in the U.S. that are unique — but she still maintains communications with the remote vendors via instant messaging and IP telephony.
