Manufacturing Efficiency That's Made-to-Order

Since 1976, Wieland Designs has been creating custom furniture, seating assemblies, and components for clients ranging from airlines to healthcare organizations. To improve its manufacturing processes and save time and materials, the company deployed bar-coding, plus hand-held scanners on all terminals. This eliminated manual data entry—and human error—at each phase of the manufacturing process. Since Wieland makes all of its furniture to order, this improvement in efficiency enabled it to guarantee 3-day turnaround from the time it receives an order to the time when the finished furniture is shipped. Wieland has also improved its manufacturing operations by replacing its separate networks with a Cisco converged IP network, and using it to connect all the computers on the floor.
