Problem Description
The gigabit interface card (GBIC) modules WS-G5484, WS-G5486, or WS-G5487 appear to be operating normally but are reporting the following software errors:
%SYS-4-PORT_GBICBADEEPROM: port bad gbic eeprom checksum %SYS-4-PORT_GBICNOTSUPP: port gbic not supported
Problem Symptoms
The following software log errors are reported:
%SYS-4-PORT_GBICBADEEPROM %SYS-4-PORT_GBICNOTSUPP
Workaround/Solution
This is a cosmetic software problem only. Hardware should not be replaced.
The following available Catalyst software releases have fixed this problem when seeproms are available on the Cisco GBIC:
-
CatOS 5.5(5) and above
-
CatOS 6.2(4)and above
To upgrade your Catalyst software, please go to the Cisco LAN Switching Software Center (registered customers only) .
If a GBIC does not have a Cisco seeprom, then upgrading the Catalyst OS software will not fix the error message. In this case, the error indicates an older Cisco GBIC or a non-certified non-Cisco GBIC is in place.
Only Cisco certified GBICs can be replaced under a support contract or warranty. To verify the GBIC is a Cisco certified one, look at the label on the top of the GBIC case for the following items.
-
A Cisco logo.
-
Cisco part number starting with 30.
-
GBIC vendor name.
