Cisco EMF v3.2 patch 1 |
Cisco EMF v3.2 can only be run with patch 1 installed |
Problem Description
Cisco has found a Solaris related performance issue that impacts the overall performance of Cisco Element Management Framework (EMF) Version 3.2 Patch 1. Element Management Systems (EMSs) running on Solaris 8. A bug in the Solaris 8 virtual memory management results in a significant performance degradation when running Solaris 2.6 applications in compatibility mode. Sun Microsystems, Inc. is currently working on a patch for this problem.
Problem Symptoms
Performance testing on Solaris 8 indicates slowdowns during action executions. Results were collected for Solaris 8 and Solaris 2.6 systems, and the execution times were compared.

Workaround/Solution
Sun Microsystems, Inc. has recommended the following workaround.
To avoid any degradation in performance when Cisco EMF v3.2 patch 1 is used on Solaris 8, the superuser (root) must edit the /etc/system file as follows:
-
Log in as root, or use the su command to become root.
-
Add a line that reads set free_pages = 0 to the /etc/system file.
Note: This line can be added anywhere in the /etc/system file.
-
Reboot the system using the reboot -- -r command.
Note: This change forces Solaris 8 to use the memory management model used in Solaris 2.6, avoiding the performance issue bug. Sun Microsystems, Inc. will resolve this bug in the next kernel patch.
