Problem Description
Hardware Installation Guides are being amended to add new electrical warning for in-line power also known as power over ethernet.
Background
As a standard procedure and policy to keep customers advised of general safety hazards, Cisco product documentation includes warnings and advisories to customers. Hardware Installation Guides for products with in-line power devices have been revised to alert customers of potentially higher voltage on data circuits. Data circuits typically carry Safety Extra Low Voltage (SELV*) that is limited to 60Vdc. Since some of the circuits with in-line power devices may be considered data circuits, operational and maintenance technicians may not be aware that potentially higher Telecommunications Network Voltages (TNV*) voltages may be present on these data circuits. For example, certain punch down panels or terminal blocks may be on a circuit with in-line power devices that has TNV voltages and the technician may be expecting only SELV voltages.
* Definition of terms: SELV - Safety Extra Low Voltage - limited to 60Vdc and 42.4Vac peak. TNV - Telecommunication Network Voltage - Voltages exceeding SELV limits but still limited in voltage and current.
Problem Symptoms
There are no product problems or symptoms. This Field Notice is being used as an advisory to alert customers that a new warning is being placed in the Hardware Installation Guides for products with in-line power devices. Workaround/Solution
The Hardware Installation Guides now include the following warning:
Warning: Voltages that present a shock hazard may exist on in-line power circuits if interconnections are made using uninsulated exposed metal contacts, conductors or terminals. Avoid using such interconnection methods, unless the exposed metal parts are located within a restricted access location and users and service people who are authorized within the restricted access location are made aware of the hazard. A restricted access area can be accessed only through the use of a special tool, lock and key or other means of security. This warning should be provided to all technical and maintenance technicians and included in the training curriculum for technical and maintenance technicians. Also, Cisco recommends that users with in-line power place this warning at areas where punch down or terminal blocks are installed.
