Cisco partners with organizations in empowerment zones to bring technology and technology education to underserved communities across the United States. These Academies receive special assistance from the program, and they have made a difference in these challenged communities. BackgroundThe U.S. government supports the revitalization plans of poor
communities by providing seed money, tax incentives and encouraging
public/private collaborations. In three rounds since 1994, 40 empowerment
zones have been designated. Cisco's CommitmentHigh Schools, colleges, and non-profit education organizations
that commit to managing the Networking Academy program for empowerment
zone students receive not only free curriculum, but also a donation
